Shanghai’s furniture and other decorative-arts Concession-era legacy is rich in diversity. The city had over 100 furniture factories in the 1930s, turning out art deco and post-Bauhaus moderne designs in a Chinese palate of different woods and sizes.
Collecting 1930s Shanghai furniture inspired me to design new pieces based upon these models. My Shen-Pai designs are of two varieties; the first is versions of quintessentially Shanghainese items still popular today; e.g. club chairs, dining sets, dry bars, etc. The second group uses Shanghainese designs on more modern furniture types; e.g. larger beds, bookshelves and writing desks. In addition I design unique pieces of furniture for clients, such as this table.
